2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute
Swallowed
No significant health effects could be found.
Eye
Mechanical action arising from eye contact (action of dust) may cause slight temporary irritation of the mucosa.
Skin
Slightly irritative.
Inhaled
Irritant to mucous membranes and the respiratory tract.
2.2 Health Effects - Chronic
According to the present state of knowledge this pigment is physiologically harmless; under extreme conditions, however, mechanical action arising from eye contact (action of dust) may cause slight temporary irritation of the mucosa.
2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
If symptoms occur seek medical attention.
Eye
In case of eye contact rinse with plenty of water. If irritation of the eyes persists, consult a doctor (ophthalmologist).
Skin
Wash affected areas thoroughly with mild soap and water.
Inhaled
Remove from contaminated area immediately, avoid becoming a casualty. If NOT breathing apply artificial resuscitation.
First Aid Facilities
Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.
2.5 Advice to Doctor
Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.
2.6 Toxicity Data
Toxicological tests on chemically identical products yielded the following
results :
Oral LD50 = >5000 mg/kg (Rat)

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards
No exposure standard has been established for this particular material, however the following is recommended for nuisance dust : TWA 10 mg/m3 (total dust) or 5 mg/m3 (respirable dust).
3.2 Engineering Controls
Ensure workplace is well ventilated to maintain airborne concentrations below standards.
3.3 Personal Protection
Eye protection : goggles Respiratory protection : dust-protection mask if the exposure limit is exceeded. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD
Fire / Explosion
Thermal decomposition : from approx 120 deg C oxidation and conversion to Fe2O3. Hazardous decomposition products : no hazardous decomposition products observed. Hazardous reactions : no hazardous reactions observed.
Extinguishing Media
Use equipment/media appropriate to surrounding fire conditions. No restriction in fire conditions.

5 OTHER INFORMATION

Other Information
Ecotoxicological tests on chemically identical products yielded the following results : Acute fish toxicity : Golden orfe (Leuciscus idus) LCo > 1000 mg/L Acute bacterial toxicity : No harmful effect on Pseudomonas putida > 1000 mg/L As the product is practically insoluble in water, it is separated in almost any filtration and sedimentation process.
