2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

2.1 Health Effects - Acute

Swallowed

If ingested in large amounts, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea are probable. Moderately toxic by ingestion. Poisoning may affect the blood calcium level.

Eye

Dusts may be irritating to the eyes.

Skin

Prolonged contact may be irritating. Slightly toxic by skin absorption.

Inhaled

Burning sensation to nose, throat and eye. May cause sneezing and coughing.

2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

No significant health effects could be found.

2.3 First Aid

Swallowed

If conscious, immediately give 2 - 4 glasses of water and induce vomiting by touching finger to back of throat. Call a physician.

Eye

Immediately flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. Obtain medical attention.

Skin

Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse. If effects occur/persist seek medical attention.

Inhaled

Remove to fresh air. If not breathing give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen, obtain medical attention.

First Aid Facilities

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

2.5 Advice to Doctor

Phosphates are laxatives. Treat symptomatically based on judgement of doctor and individual reactions of patient.

2.6 Toxicity Data

Oral LD50 = 4100 mg/kg (Rat) ; 3210 mg/kg (Mouse) Dermal LD50 = >7940 mg/kg (Rabbit) Subcutaneous LD50 = 2060 mg/kg (Rat) This material is not considered to be a carcinogen or mutagen. No reproductive effects habe been identified.

3. PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

3.1 Exposure Standards

No exposure limit has been established for this product, however the following is recommended for nuisance dust : TWA = 10 mg/m3.

3.2 Engineering Controls

Provide local mechanical ventilation capable of maintaining dust emissions at a minimum level.

3.3 Personal Protection

Respiratory - if use conditions generate dusts, wear an approved respirator appropriate for those emission levels. Appropriate respirators may be a full face piece or a half mask air-purifying cartridge respirator with particulate filters, a self-contained breathing apparatus in the pressure demand mode, or a supplied-air respirator. Hands - wear rubber gloves. Eyes - wear chemical safety goggles unless a full face piece respirator is worn. Skin - wear protective clothing with rubber boots. Avoid breathing dust. Wash hands and face thoroughly after handling and before work breaks, eating, drinking, smoking and using toilet facilities.

3.4 Flammability

Material is non flammable.

4.3 Spills and Disposal

Spills

Clean up personnel should wear full protective clothiing including breathing apparatus suitable to dust conditions. Avoid raising dust. Keep material out of sewers, storm drains, surface waters and soil.

Sweep up and shovel material with a minimum of dusting into approved waste disposal containers for later disposal. Move containers from spill area. Cautiously wash spill residues with plenty of water.

Disposal

Dispose of contaminated product and material used in cleaning up spills or leak in a manner approved for this material by Local, State and Federal regulations. Empty containers can have residues, gases and mists and are subject to proper waste disposal as above.

4.4 FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD

Fire / Explosion

Material is stable under normal conditions of use. Aqueous solutions react with aluminium and liberate hydrogen. Fire may produce irritating or poisonous gases. Solutions are midly corrosive to aluminium and galvanised steel.

Extinguishing Media

Fire-fighters should wear full protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or foam type extinguishers. Use water spray to cool nearby containers and structures exposed to fire.

5 OTHER INFORMATION
