Uses :
In the soft drink industry, confectionary products, bakery products, gelatin desserts. In photography, tanning, ceramics, manufacture of tartrates. The common commercial esters are the diethyl and dibutyl derivatives used for lacquers and in testile printing. An intermediate in chemical synthesis, set- retardant in cement and gypsum plaster, in metal cleaning formulations.

2. HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
2.1 Health Effects - Acute
Swallowed
Causes irritation of the mucous membranes and may cause nausea and vomiting.
Eye
Causes irritation after even brief contact.
Skin
Causes irritation after prolonged contact.
Inhaled
Causes irritation of the mucous membranes and the upper respiratory tract.
2.2 Health Effects - Chronic

2.3 First Aid
Swallowed
Wash the mouth out with water and drink 1 - 2 glasses of water, in serious cases consult a doctor.
Eye
Rinse thoroughly with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. If irritation persists, consult a doctor.
Skin
Wash immediately with soap and plenty of water.
Inhaled
Move the patient from the contaminated area to an area with clean, fresh air; if breathing fails use artificial respiration; in case of breathing difficulties administer oxygen.

Ensure an eye bath and safety shower are available and ready for use.

4.3 Spills and Disposal
Spills
Clean-up personnel should wear full protective clothing including breathing protection in dusty environments. Do not contaminate surface water.
Tartaric acid is non-toxic and completely biodegradable. Small spillages can be flushed away with water. Large spillages should be collected in suitable containers and held for disposal. Wash the spillage area with plenty of water.
